It was a personal journey that I was trying to share, but when I met other survivors of DV, I realized that this story is not just mine. It is a burden that all humanity bears. Domestic abuse is by far the most widespread and least punished crime in the world. And yet no one talks about it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Sujata Setia<\/strong> (Instagram)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The free-to-enter global photography competition Sony Awards paves the way for the development of visual culture by providing a global platform that challenges the agglutination around the talent that defines today&#8217;s world in all its diversity. Established in 2007, it is one of the largest and most prestigious photography competitions in the world, celebrating the work of photographers and attracting tens of thousands of visitors to its exhibitions annually. There are no premises for images generated by artificial intelligence programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sujata Seti<\/strong>a, an artist from the U.K., won the grand prize in the &#8222;Creative&#8221; section, with a very topical theme, entitled &#8222;Death by a thousand cuts&#8221; or &#8222;Lingchi&#8221;, in which she presents a photographic study of the patterns of domestic abuse in the community from South Asia.<\/p>\n<p>The project calls for a compositional game between metaphor and symbol, achieved through the graphic augmentation of photographs. Sujata Setia describes her work as follows:<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;I borrowed Lingchi&#8217;s metaphorical meaning to present the cyclical nature of domestic abuse. The continuous act of chipping the soul of the abused is expressed through the cuts on the portraits.<\/p>\n<p>The paper used for printing is a thin A4 sheet, depicting the fragility of existence.<\/p>\n<p>We kept the project modest in size, like &#8222;home&#8221;, using the available resources as a reflection of a shared space. The final work is photographed in a very closed and tight setting, so as to express a sense of suffocation and the impossibility of freedom of movement.<\/p>\n<p>The red color used in the portraits through several different frames of reference. The intention was to create a metaphorical &#8222;waiting room&#8221;, where strangers meet and talk to each other without fear of judgment or hierarchy. An imaginary space that serves the conversations around the experiences of abuse, torture that often continues to happen endlessly. A comfortable space, where it is easy to leave. A room where you are heard, seen, understood and where you feel safe to be able to leave your story behind.<\/p>\n<p>The project began by portraying the victims in a space owned by a church in Hounslow, Great Britain. We held hands and talked a lot. No one interrupted the other. No one left the room halfway through.<\/p>\n<p>These initial dialogues led to the creation of a vector of trust between me and the participants in this project. From private conversations to photographing each survivor individually, with their consent and total control over how they want to be &#8222;seen.&#8221; Once I printed the images, the portrayed victim selected the image she wanted me to start cutting or applying graphic marks on, and made suggestions about the metaphorical representation of personal narratives. abuse, moving them from the private space to the public one, generating the complicated rituals of disclosure. This photographic study is based on interviews with 21 South Asian women (it is an ongoing project) and analyzes the interactional and emotional processes of the public migration of their private reality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Death by a thousand cuts&#8221; is an invitation to an open dialogue that allows both the survivor and society in general to explore concepts such as trauma, suffering, genetic and cultural predispositions, gender and identity politics, without sacrificing their own vulnerability or risking a confrontation. It is a very complex reality. Of being a woman. Also, being a South Asian woman. Sujata Setia describes her work as follows:<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;I borrowed Lingchi&#8217;s metaphorical meaning to present the cyclical nature of domestic abuse. The continuous act of chipping the soul of the abused is expressed through the cuts on the portraits.<\/p>\n<p>The paper used for printing is a thin A4 sheet, depicting the fragility of existence.<\/p>\n<p>We kept the project modest in size, like &#8222;home&#8221;, using the available resources as a reflection of a shared space. The final work is photographed in a very closed and tight setting, so as to express a sense of suffocation and the impossibility of freedom of movement.<\/p>\n<p>The red color used in the portraits signifies not only martyrdom or power, but also the hope of a new beginning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n[foogallery id=\"43423\"]\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Death by a thousand cuts&#8221; is an effort to understand abuse through several different frames of reference. The intention was to create a metaphorical &#8222;waiting room&#8221;, where strangers meet and talk to each other without fear of judgment or hierarchy. An imaginary space that serves the conversations around the experiences of abuse, torture that often continues to happen endlessly. A comfortable space, where it is easy to leave. A room where you are heard, seen, understood and where you feel safe to be able to leave your story behind.<\/p>\n<p>The project began by portraying the victims in a space owned by a church in Hounslow, Great Britain. We held hands and talked a lot. No one interrupted the other. No one left the room halfway through.<\/p>\n<p>These initial dialogues led to the creation of a vector of trust between me and the participants in this project. From private conversations to photographing each survivor individually, with their consent and total control over how they want to be &#8222;seen.&#8221; Once I printed the images, the portrayed victim selected the image she wanted me to start cutting or applying graphic marks on, and made suggestions about the metaphorical representation of personal narratives. More than a year has passed since the beginning of the project and the discussions continue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n[foogallery id=\"43428\"]\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Through these conversations, we tried to study the patterns and models of abuse, moving them from the private space to the public one, generating the complicated rituals of disclosure. This photographic study is based on interviews with 21 South Asian women (it is an ongoing project) and analyzes the interactional and emotional processes of the public migration of their private reality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Death by a thousand cuts&#8221; is an invitation to an open dialogue that allows both the survivor and society in general to explore concepts such as trauma, suffering, genetic and cultural predispositions, gender and identity politics, without sacrificing their own vulnerability or risking a confrontation.
