In front of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, a child sleeps on a dog. The cobblestones of the square rise up over them like a blanket.
They are Nello and Patrasche, the characters from the novella *A Dog of Flanders*, published in 1872. Nello is an orphan, poor, and dreams of becoming a painter. Patrasche is the dog he rescued. Their story ends in winter, inside the cathedral where the boy used to come to see the paintings by Rubens. They die together. The sculpture by Batist Vermeulen was installed in front of the cathedral in 2016.
Both are smiling.
They sleep curled up against each other.
When I was an art student, I often went to the cathedral. In the city center, I would encounter a few people who begged, and I eventually came to recognize them.
One winter, one of them was lying on a bench.
He had died.
I don’t know what killed him. I remember the cold, the bench, and the body. I know almost nothing about his life.
Standing before the sculpture, I was reminded of that bench.
Vermeulen placed the child at the level of our feet. To see him, you have to cast your gaze downward. Their blanket is made of the very stone we walk upon.
Many monuments reach for the heights. Here, everything takes place down low, close to the ground.
The cold is drawing near once again. For those sleeping outdoors, a bench serves as a bed, and an archway blocks some of the wind.
In the evening, we will go into our homes and close the doors. A few streets away, someone is looking for a corner sheltered from the wind, calculating how much warmth a piece of cardboard might hold until morning.
