Moldavian Chronicles, (Almost) Weird

A Titan of Primordial Colour, an  Australian in Galați

We should all know who the Titans were—or were not! To any rational person, they did not exist in reality; but in that “most interesting reality, if not the most beautiful one” (an allusion to Elena Grigoriu’s philosophical book The Most Beautiful Reality), they are an unattainable symbol!

Of course, Neluș Oană never set out to storm Heaven and dethrone Zeus! Perhaps only the Heaven of his inner art, which cries out, with the justification of Arghezi’s psalmist, to be made manifest in the fragile realm of outward form!

In his seventh solo exhibition in Galați, the visual artist born in Pechea but now a citizen of the world finds the right Measure of tone and tames the Matter of colour—with relish, but without greed. He is also Van Gogh, honoured in Flower Torn from the Sun, a Van Gogh of Red; he could even be a Houellebecqian character—an allusion to the visual artist in The Map and the Territory, Jed Martin, who bluntly and austerely emphasises the erotic power of flowers. After all, in the visual arts, Nature can be many things: a pretext, a setting, an extension of the human soul, a muse or source of inspiration, a mirror of the human spirit, a model, a symbol, and so on, depending on the historical age…

Schopenhauerian or not, Nature is not necessarily seen as a romantic or idyllic place. In fact, that hardly matters: form and suggestion are more important, the artist says in conversations at exhibition openings, if I remember correctly. So is work—unceasing work. Both Nature and Herculean labour can sometimes be almost raw manifestations of the “will to live” and of the pure instinct of reproduction, reproduction itself becoming, if we may stretch the point, a desire of the work of art.

It is as though some of Oană’s works want to have their own abstract, hermetic love story, to have their own children—indeed, their own children—flowers giving rise to other flowers… A will to colour, a will to paint!

In a brief conversation with another Titan of the history of the visual arts, Corneliu Stoica, in 2003, he said that he did not paint but rather… struck. We, having witnessed only his last two or three exhibitions, may now say that, at the age of full artistic maturity, Neluș Oană… is blossoming—and not in any ordinary way.

Even the landscapes on display seem, whether or not they actually contain flowers, to be… in bloom: the haystacks of Transylvania look like flowers, the waves of Sydney look like flowers; had he dared to paint a self-portrait, we would probably have seen flowers there too; his memories of Pechea are flowers as well…

His Paradise seems to be a Paradise of flowers, which may also be books, in the manner of Borges or Umberto Eco. Perhaps this is one of the revelations of Neluș Oană’s work: in Paradise, books are flowers; they have their shape, or some floral shape that we could not imagine, only intuit!

Cinematically, this might bring to mind What Dreams May Come, starring Robin Williams and based on Richard Matheson’s novel, where Paradise takes the form of three-dimensional paintings, in which colour is so important—even to a certain kind of salvation!

Actually, I am mistaken: there are self-portraits as well, such as the painting entitled In Love! Or the one called Happiness!

Yes, Neluș Oană has overcome the limitations about which Noica wrote, with the Romanian particularity of Lower Moldavia seducing the universal. His armies of flowers are ready to conquer what is, most often, unconquerable…

Australia is to Oană what Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands were to Gauguin: his retreat into the biblical desert, or into the desert of the Ocean, or into the desert and vanity of Red—dreamlike or not, but always controlled. Among the works are My Dream, Oceanic Dream, and Dream Landscape, the latter somewhat recalling the technique and certain “pieces” of Aurel Manole.

With considerable courage, he enters into dialogue—and perhaps even into competition—with giants such as Ștefan Luchian, Arthur Verona, Ion Țuculescu, Claude Monet, Édouard Manet, Georgia O’Keeffe, Gustav Klimt, Henri Matisse, Ambrosius Bosschaert, Maria van Oosterwijck, Kamatsu Shiro, and the Australian John Perceval; or, if you prefer not to venture quite so boldly, with Teodor Vișan, Sterică Bădălan, Gheorghe Andreescu, Lola Schmierer Roth, Nicolae Mantu, and Cornel Corcăcel, whenever these artists have set—or set—their minds (their thoughts; another work is entitled Three Thoughts!) against Her Majesty Nature and her flowers…

All of this… because he has rediscovered what may be called “Home”! The spiritual space of Primordial Colour, from which all the rainbows of the world are born.

Perhaps Neluș Oană should become the first artist obsessed with the Rainbow, dedicating a series of works to it, perhaps an exhibition—or several exhibitions. He has earned the right to measure himself against the power of the Rainbow, itself a sign of divine peace!

Because, perhaps unnoticed by many, Neluș Oană is also a poet of the Sacred (and of the sacredness of Nature, but of Divinity as well!)… Several titles whisper this discreetly, humbly: Dedication to the Creator, The Lord’s Intensity, The Burning Bush

So this is also about Faith—and about a faith in Love. Intensity is another key word; there is even another work entitled Intensity, the second after the one I shall mention in the following paragraph… Another work is Fulfilled Love, and indeed the artist may consider himself fulfilled, with a passion for which words are, as usual, far too powerless!

Without a doubt, Neluș Oană demonstrates that prayers can also be made through Colour: games of colour—let them be joy, praise, gratitude, thanksgiving, happiness! A mixture of colour and total surrender, through sacrifice, through The Fire That Does Not Burn, the work somehow chosen as exemplary—the one with which the visit begins, the one reproduced on the poster and in the miniature catalogue—where poppies that are not poppies enter into dialogue with the world of Platonic Ideas!

*************************

It is useful, almost unnecessary, to say that the lines above were inspired by my presence at an unforgettable exhibition opening. Admittedly, I arrived physically some several dozen minutes before the opening itself, but I was there for Neluș Oană’s exhibition home, curated by the painter Gheorghe Miron, manager of the Museum of Visual Art.

The exhibition took place on 18 August 2026 at the Nicolae Mantu Galleries, at 7 p.m.—not 6 p.m., as I had understood it, sic! A trivial detail, perhaps, but an important one for historians of every kind. Gigi Miron had taken care of every detail concerning the display of the 34 works brought all the way from Australia. And one can imagine how interesting the analysis of the colours used will be for art historians: were they Chinese, Australian, Japanese, Korean colours?

The curator mentioned above, Cornel Corcăcel, president of the Galați branch of the Union of Visual Artists of Romania, also spoke, as did the actor Lică Dănilă, another legend of Galați’s cultural life, whom few people know to be, or to have been, a poet; he gave a lyrical recital.

The large audience, among whom was the writer Stan M. Andrei, confirms that Galați is deeply proud of the work and the man who gave birth to it: Neluș Oană! An artist who brings honour to Galați in Sydney, indeed across an entire continent, alongside a poet who remains far too little known, Dorian Stoilescu.

AI Mode Conversation: What Does Houellebecq’s Character Say About Flowers as Sexual Organs?

In Michel Houellebecq’s novel The Map and the Territory (La Carte et le Territoire), published in 2010 and awarded the prestigious Prix Goncourt, the protagonist, Jed Martin, reflects deeply and cynically on flowers.

The narrator, while describing Jed’s childhood drawings, expresses the following striking idea:

“…flowers are nothing other than sexual organs, variegated vaginas adorning the surface of the world, left at the mercy of the insects’ debauchery.”

Context and Meaning

A Schopenhauerian vision: This observation reflects the strong influence of the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer on Michel Houellebecq. Nature is not presented as a romantic or idyllic realm, but as a raw manifestation of the “will to live” and of the pure instinct of reproduction.

The demystification of beauty: Through this comparison, the author demystifies the traditional symbol of purity and beauty—the flower—reducing it to its purely biological, anatomical and sexual function.

In this perspective, the flower ceases to be merely an emblem of beauty, innocence or transcendence. It becomes an image of the biological machinery underlying life itself: reproduction, desire and the relentless continuation of the species.

This Houellebecqian perspective provides an intriguing counterpoint to Neluș Oană’s painting. In Oană’s work, flowers seem to transcend their biological function and become colour, memory, desire, prayer, thought and even a possible form of Paradise. Where Houellebecq exposes the sexual anatomy concealed beneath the beauty of the flower, Oană appears to transform that same biological impulse into an aesthetic and spiritual one.

Thus, the flower can be read in two opposite yet strangely complementary ways: as the raw organ of Nature’s reproductive will, and as a vehicle through which the artist attempts to transform Nature into beauty, meaning and, ultimately, a form of prayer.

Cronici moldovenești, (aproape într-o) Ureche

by Adi G.Secară
