Photographer Anastasia Sierra was awarded Second Prize in the Life Framer Edition XI Series for her deeply personal project, The Witching Hour. The series was judged by Lisa Woodward and Mia Dalglish, co-curators at Pictura Gallery.

Sierra’s proposed photographic project develops as a visual meditation on motherhood, exploring a complex emotional territory, where the boundaries between dream and reality become permeable. The artist constructs intimate scenes in the domestic space, where members of her family become characters in a theater of light and shadow. Each frame seems carefully orchestrated, but retains a dreamlike quality, as if the images follow the fragmented logic of dreams.

“As I fall asleep, I can no longer distinguish dreams from reality,” Sierra confesses. This confusion becomes the conceptual core of the series: a world in which the anxieties of motherhood – fear of loss, overwhelming responsibility, fragility of relationships – manifest themselves in the form of symbolic narratives. In her images, the child, the father and her own identity coexist in a space charged with affective tension, where love and fear constantly intertwine.

Critics at Life Framer note the pictorial dimension of the works: the compositions sometimes evoke the religious iconography of the Renaissance, without directly quoting, but rather through an internalized visual language. The light falls theatrically, the backgrounds are absorbed by dense shadows, and the textures become narrative elements in themselves. This singular aesthetic transforms the everyday into a symbolic space, in which family relationships gain an almost tangible visibility.

A recurring element in the series is the subtle reversal of roles: the child sometimes becomes the symbolic source of the mother, and the presence of the father introduces another dimension of dependence and care. Sierra thus captures not only motherhood as an individual experience, but also the complex network of relationships that define it.

“My images follow the logic of dreams, in which we are trapped in a strange and colorful world, playing an endless game of hide-and-seek in a labyrinth of love and fear,” explains the artist. In this labyrinth, the only possible way out remains awakening – a metaphor for awareness and acceptance.

With Witching Hour, Anastasia Sierra contributes to an increasingly open contemporary discourse on motherhood, one that does not avoid contradictions: tenderness coexists with exhaustion, and beauty with chaos. The result is an intense visual work that invites the viewer to reflect on their own relationships and on the fragile balance between self and other.
