On January 16, 2025, David Lynch’s family announced on Facebook: “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, “Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole. It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”

An announcement in the typical Lynchian style of convoluted and cryptic, announcing the death of one of the greatest cultural figures of the 20th century. The Guardian, reporting the news, used headlines such as: Film-maker who specialized in surreal, noir style mysteries made a string of influential, critically acclaimed works including Wild at Heart and Eraserhead; the great American surrealist who made experimentalism mainstream; Hollywood pays tribute to David Lynch: „A singular and visionary dreamer”.

Coincidentally, I was preparing an article about four famous directors who also have a passion for photography: Wim Wenders, Stanley Kubrick, Jim Jarmusch and of course David Lynch. Unfortunately, the great Lynch drew the black ball of the final lottery and it became a moral obligation to dedicate this article exclusively to him, in memory and tribute. It is very difficult to create a synthetic and coherent article about the artist David Lynch. His passions flourished and traveled at high speed: photography, photocollage, painting, graphics, lithography and woodworking, his legacy including countless works that are difficult to ignore but also impossible to gather together in a representative collection. Exhaustive is a word that has no place in the work of a curator or collector passionate about David Lynch’s art.

That is why we have tried to outline the personality of David Lynch the photographer, offering some of his tireless activity, synthetically commented by John Bender as follows: “David helped me realize that reality is broken and sanity is just an opinion, but art can fix that”.

“David Lynch – The Factory Photographs”. This collection of photographs, as explained by producer Petra Giloy-Hirtz, reveals his unmistakable signature; surreal images that resemble dream sequences in subjects, moods and shades of color. Otherworldly spaces, encrypted symbols, strange metamorphoses, obsession with cars: they certainly remind us of the labyrinthine, enigmatic and ominous qualities of his films. Buildings are shrouded in fog, vapor and steam. Raindrops blur the view. It is always autumn or winter and the bare branches of the trees stand out like silhouettes against the milky gray color of the sky. The brick structures with arches, cornices, domes and towers, with high windows and portals, resemble cathedrals.

David Lynch describes his passion for factories: “It’s so beautiful, what happens in these abandoned factories. Many of them are so beautiful. They are like cathedrals, but Mother Nature claims them.

At first glance, they feel dark and almost threatening. But that’s only part of it. These places of peace and dignity, have a poetic and even romantic aura, a beauty. Great, great beauty!

“When I first saw Blue Velvet, it changed my life,” wrote photographer Gregory Crewdson last week, in response to the news that celebrated director David Lynch had died at the age of 78. The enigmatic director behind Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, and Twin Peaks had a profound impact not only on cinema but also on photography. His quintessentially American surrealist aesthetic, which blends the strange with the mundane, has inspired countless photographers to push the boundaries of composition, lighting, and subject matter. Lynch’s ability to imbue ordinary settings with dreamlike, often unsettling qualities has profoundly affected the way photographers harness the “uncanny” of visual storytelling. David Lynch acknowledges the visual influences of Francis Bacon, and in his photographs we can find something of the substance of the renowned photographer William Eggleston. Another photographer Lynch admires is Diane Arbus. “He had depression and mental health issues. „I like mental issues,” Lynch told The New York Times in 2004.

A photography enthusiast, David Lynch has authored at least five books, in which he continues to explore the surrealist and expressionist themes that made him famous in cinema. The professional press writes about photographer David Lynch: “Lynch had an affinity for analog photography and the unpredictability of the darkroom process. Like his films, his photographic works are created through a deliberate, hands-on approach, and he embraces the imperfections that come with working with film.”

Photographers pay tribute to David Lynch by stating:

–  Lynch’s legacy is even broader than his body of work, because he has touched so many other artists, influenced the stories we tell, and informed the way we see the world. (Gregory Crewdson)

– I think what I saw was how a true artist could use the most ubiquitous place to create the most shocking and radical images and stories. In a way, it was the most American thing ever: Twin Peaks was in prime time. (Roe Ethridge)

In 2017, David Lynch published the album “Nudes”, his fascination with the female body transporting him to the bizarre series of photo collages “Distorted Nude”, described by the author as “Photogravures”. Cataloged as a “psychedelic peep show”, these works arouse artistic as well as technical interest. On Reddit, r/photography user wrote: “Yesterday I was really excited to visit an exhibition called «Infinite Deep», a showcase of the photographic work of the famous director David Lynch. I really like his style, just like I like his films. And then my friend asked me how he took his pictures. Did he use some kind of Photoshop? Is it a manual collage? I found myself unable to answer the questions, so I thought I would turn to the community…”

Here are the answers:

– There were classic analog photography techniques but collage was also used. Often this involved photographing the final collage, using dodging/burning to blend the shading, producing a more realistic final result. (sitheandroid)

– Personally I think this is a type of Photoshop collage, similar to what hip-hop artists do working with old records. There are also some basic digital-looking aspects to the edges of many of the figures. The “censorship” adds to the mystery! (i-am-a –platyplus)

Un anunţ în stilul alambicat şi cifrat tipic lynchean, prin care era anunţată moartea unuia dintre cei mai mari oameni de cultură ai secolului XX. The Guardian, oferind ştirea, s-a folosit ca titluri ca: Film-maker who specialised in surreal, noir style mysteries made a string of influential, critically acclaimed works including Wild at Heart and Eraserhead; marele suprarealist american care a făcut ca experimentalismul să devină mainstream; Hollywood-ul îi aduce un omagiu lui David Lynch: „Un visător singular și vizionar”.

Coincidenţa  face că aveam în pregătire un articol despre patru regizori renumiţi care au şi pasiunea fotografiei: Wim Wenders, Stanley Kubrick, Jim Jarmusch şi bineinţeles David Lynch. Din păcate, marele Lynch a tras bila neagră a loteriei finale şi a devenit o obligaţie morală să dedicăm acest articol în exclusivitate lui, spre amintire şi omagiu. Este foarte greu de realizat un articol sintetic şi coerent despre artistul David Lynch. Pasiunile lui înfloreau şi călătoreau cu mare viteza: fotografia, fotocolajul, pictura, grafica, litografia şi lucrul cu lemnul, moştenirea incluzînd nenumărate opere care sunt greu de ignorat dar şi imposibil de adunat lalolaltă într-o colecţie reprezentativă. Exhaustiv este un cuvant care nu are ce căuta în munca unui curator sau colectionar pasionat de arta lui David Lynch.

De aceea am încercat să conturăm pe scurt personalitatea lui David Lynch fotograful, oferind o parte din neobosita sa activitate, comentată de John Bender astfel: “David m-a ajutat să realizez că realitatea este distrusă și sănătatea mintală este doar o opinie, dar arta poate repara asta”.

“David Lynch – The Factory Photographs”.  Această colecție de fotografii, așa cum a explicat producătorul Petra Giloy-Hirtz, dezvăluie semnătura sa inconfundabilă; imagini suprareale care seamănă cu secvențele de vis în subiecte, dispoziții și nuanțe de culoare. Spațiile din altă lume, simbolurile criptate, metamorfozele ciudate, obsesia pentru mașini: cu siguranță ne amintesc de calitățile labirintice, enigmatice și de rău augur ale filmelor sale. Clădirile sunt învăluite în ceață, vapori și abur. Picăturile de ploaie estompează vederea. Este întotdeauna toamnă sau iarnă și ramurile goale ale copacilor ies ca niște siluete pe culoarea cenușie lăptoasă a cerului. Structurile din cărămidă cu arcade, cornișe, cupole și turnuri, cu ferestre și portaluri înalte, seamănă cu catedralele.

David Lynch descrie pasiunea pentru fabrici: “Este atât de frumos, ce se întâmplă în aceste fabrici abandonate. Sunt ca şi catedralele, iar mama natură le revendică.

La prima vizionare, se simte că sunt întunecate și aproape amenințătoare. Dar asta e doar o parte. Aceste locuri de liniște și demnitate, au o aură poetică și chiar romantică, o frumusețe. Mare, mare frumusețe!

„Când am văzut Blue Velvet pentru prima dată, mi-a schimbat viața”, a scris fotograful Gregory Crewdson, ca reacție la vestea că celebrul David Lynch a murit la vârsta de 78 de ani. Regizorul enigmatic din spatele filmelor Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive și Twin Peaks, a avut un impact profund nu numai în cinematografie dar şi asupra fotografiei. Estetica sa suprarealistă tipic americană, care îmbină ciudatul cu mondenul, a inspirat nenumărați fotografi să depășească limitele în compoziție, iluminare și subiect. Capacitatea lui Lynch de a impregna decorurile obișnuite cu calități de vis, adesea neliniștitoare, a afectat profund modul în care fotografii îşi valorifica “uncanny”-ul naraţiunii vizuale.

David Lynch recunoaşte influenţele vizuale ale lui Francis Bacon iar în fotografiile sale putem găsi ceva din substanţa cunoscutului fotograf  William Eggleston. Un alt fotograf admirat de Lynch este Diane Arbus. „Ea a avut depresie și probleme mentale. Îmi plac problemele mentale”, a declarat Lynch pentru The New York Times în 2004.

Pasionat de fotografie, David Lynch a fost autorul a cel puţin cinci cărţi, în care continuă explorarea temelor suprarealiste sau expresioniste care l-au făcut celebru în cinematografie. Presa de specialitate scrie despre fotograful David Lynch: “Lynch avea o afinitate pentru fotografia analogică și imprevizibilitatea procesului camerei întunecate. La fel ca filmele sale, lucrările sale fotografice sunt create printr-o abordare deliberată, practică și el îmbrățișează imperfecțiunile care vin odată cu filmul foto.”

Fotografii îl omagiază pe David Lynch declarând:

– Moștenirea lui Lynch este chiar mai vastă decât corpul său de lucrări, pentru că a atins atât de mulți alți artiști, a influențat poveștile pe care le spunem și a informat modul în care vedem lumea. (Gregory Crewdson)

– Cred că ceea ce am văzut a fost modul în care un artist adevărat ar putea folosi omniprezentul  pentru a realiza cele mai șocante și radicale imagini și povești. Într-un fel, a fost cel mai american lucru vreodată: Twin Peaks a fost în prime time. ( Roe Ethridge)

În 2017, David Lynch a publicat albumul “Nuduri”, fascinaţia pentru corpul feminin transportându-l spre bizara serie de colaje foto “Distorted Nude”, descrise de autor ca “Fotogravuri”. Catalogate de critică ca un “peep show psihedelic”, aceste opere suscită interes artistic dar şi tehnic.

Pe site-ul Reddit, utilizatorul r/photography a scris: “Ieri am fost foarte încântat să vizitez o expoziție numită “Infinite Deep” , o vitrină a operei fotografice a celebrului regizor David Lynch. Îmi place foarte mult stilul lui, așa cum îmi plac filmele lui. Și apoi prietena mea m-a întrebat cum și-a făcut pozele. A folosit un fel de Photoshop? Este un colaj manual? M-am trezit că nu am putut să răspund la întrebări, așa că m-am gândit să apelez la comunitate…”

Iată şi răspunsurile:

– Au fost tehnici clasice de fotografie analogică dar și colajul a fost folosit. Adesea, această operaţiune a implicat fotografiarea colajului final, folosind dodging/burning pentru a amesteca umbrirea, producând un rezultat final mai realist. (sitheandroid)

– Personal cred că acesta este un tip de colaj Photoshop, asemănător cu ce fac  artiștii hip-hop care lucrează cu discuri vechi. Există şi câteva aspecte de bază cu aspect digital pe marginile multor figuri. „Cenzura” creşte misterul! (i-am-a –platyplus)
